About Allister and Green Oak Buildings

A small, local oak framing business by choice. One person on your job from the first trench to the finished frame.

I'm Allister Greenford. I run Green Oak Buildings And Construction from Whitchurch Hill, near Reading, and I've been trading for four years, building oak framed extensions, garages, garden rooms and porches across South Oxfordshire and North Berkshire.

"I'm a simple guy running a small business. I don't want to look like a national company. I offer a personal touch, local, honest oak framing building service. I will be working with the client and be on the job all through the project, from ground up to finish. Unlike bigger framing companies which only cut and deliver frames, I pride myself on communication and organisation."

That's the whole pitch. Each frame is cut from green oak in my workshop and raised on your site by me. I do my own ground works, so the footings, drainage and slab are done before the frame arrives and there is no waiting on another trade. You deal with one person throughout, and that person is the one holding the mallet.

Oak frame laid out and jointed on the workshop floor before it goes to site

Cut in the workshop, raised on site

Green oak is oak used unseasoned. It's cut and jointed while the timber is still workable, then dries and hardens in place over the years. Each frame is laid out on the workshop floor so every joint can be checked before it goes to site, then raised and pegged together the traditional way.

Most of my work is the larger kind: kitchen extensions with glazed gables, orangeries with roof lanterns, two-storey entrances and multi-bay garages. It's the work I like best.

Not a national company

The bigger framing companies cut a frame, deliver it and leave you to find a builder for the rest. I don't work that way, and I don't want to. The number on this site is my mobile. When you call it, you get the person who will draw your frame, dig your footings, raise the oak and finish the job.

How I work

The same five stages on every job, with me on site for all of them.

  1. Hand-dimensioned drawing of an oak frame with a gable truss and tie beams

    Consultation

I visit your site, talk through your plans and give a free, no-obligation quotation.

  2. 3D design drawing of an oak framed kitchen extension against the existing house

    Design

The frame is drawn up around your property and preferences before any timber is cut.

  3. Foundation trenches dug for an extension at the rear of a white house

    Ground works

I handle the excavation, drainage and foundations as well, so nothing waits on other trades.

  4. Telehandler lifting oak beams onto a new brick plinth beside the house

    Frame raising

Each frame is cut, then raised and pegged on site by the person who made it.

  5. Finished kitchen with exposed oak trusses, an island and bi-fold doors to the garden

    Finishing

Glazing, roofing and the final details, completed to an agreed schedule.

What customers say

A professional building firm. Allister is a genuine guy - reliable, friendly and listened to our needs for our extension. His timber work is beautiful and is passionate about the details. Highly recommended.

Allister took on our Oak Orangery project after original contractors pulled out, site had tricky access but he found ways to make it happen, He turned up when he said he would and left the site in a clean and tidy state at the end of each day. Communication was good through out so would not hesitate to recommend his services in the future or contact him again if we want any future work
Robert Ibbett Google review
This company converted my garage into a beautiful kitchen. Allister was efficient, diligent and his workmanship was perfect. The job was completed within the estimated timescale and price. I have no hesitation in recommending this company.
John Westthorp Google review
I can only highly recommend Allister - he and his team have done a great job replacing some external steps to our garage - they look so good that we are considering building an oak garden room to replace our existing. He made it all happen with the minimum of fuss and exactly to our timeframe. Thank you.
